BILLING PROCESS & PAYMENT METHODS

Foothills Gas operates & maintains its own natural gas distribution system. We also process our own billing, if you have purchased a property within our franchise area, please see Land Transfers (New Set up/Cancellation)

A monthly meter reading is collected from each active service site within our franchise area by aerial data logging on or around the 1st of each month. We then utilize this data logging to provide us with a meter reading collected at 8:00 am on the 1st of each month to use for the current billing cycle.

For inquiries regarding “Locked In” Gas Rates: Gas Co-ops are not regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission, partly because we are owned by our members/landowners, not shareholders. The elected Board of Directors (must be Co-op members) approve the monthly fixed & delivery rates proposed by management that are fair to the members while reflecting the needs of the co-op to maintain the system. Any excess revenue at the end of the year is invested back into the system for future capital replacement.

PRESS RELEASE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

What is the mark up on the natural gas that I buy from Foothills Natural Gas?

There is no mark up. Foothills Natural Gas Co-op is a member owned utility and natural gas is sold to our members at cost.

I've PURCHASED a property that gets its services from Foothills Gas? How do I set up an account?

Please call the office at 1-403-556-3007. See Land Transfers

What does the monthly fixed charge cover?

The monthly fixed fee covers the administration, operation, and maintainance of the system, including regular inspections of the distribution system which is an integral part of our operating and maintenance program; monitoring system integrity and ensuring public safety.

Can I switch my service from Foothills Gas and choose which retailer I get my natural gas from?

No, if your property is located in our franchise area, we are your only option for natural gas service. Gas co-ops are different from all other Alberta regulated and competitive retailers. We are both a gas distributor with our own underground gas line system and a gas billing provider. In Alberta, consumers cannot choose their own gas distributor. Foothills Gas operates under the Rural Utilities Act legislation which gives participating co-ops the exclusive right to provide natural gas service to all consumers in a franchise area and this cannot be infringed upon by other retailers. Gas co-op pricing and fees are often very competitive or even lower than other retailers. The reason for this is we are not-for-profit and are locally owned and controlled by you our members, not shareholders.

My land title has changed. Does Foothills Gas need to know?

Yes, if there have been any recent changes to your land title (example: land transfer, name change, subdivision or ATS change) please contact the office

When is my gas bill due?

Our payment due date is the 28th of each month. Any unpaid balance will be subject to a Penalty charge of 2% of the amount owing.

Why does the price of natural gas fluctuate?

The price of natural gas is constantly changing due to influences on supply and demand, as are most commodities. Suppliers have greater access to markets due to pipeline expansion. Supply quite often cannot keep pace with demand, which raises the price of the commodity.

How do I know if Foothills Gas is my service provider?

Locate your gas meter and the name of the gas co-op that services your rural property will be engraved on a metal tag on the gas meter. If you live in a city, town or village you can go to the Utilities Consumer Advocate website to search for energy retailers in your area. Visit their website ucahelps.alberta.ca/retailers.

Where is the capital that the Co-op requires for operation/maintenance of the system derived from?

Capital is derived from the flow rate which covers distribution costs. The flow rate (delivery fee) is currently set at $1.25 /GJ.

Does Foothills Gas offer "LOCKED IN" gas rates or Budget Billing?

No, we do not offer locked in gas rates or budget billing. We do not mark up the cost of gas and bill our members/customers the exact cost we purchase it at. Gas Co-ops are not regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission, partly because we are owned by our members/landowners, not shareholders. The elected Board of Directors (must be Co-op members) approve the monthly fixed & delivery rates proposed by management that are fair to the members while reflecting the needs of the co-op to maintain the system. Any excess revenue at the end of the year is invested back into the system for future capital replacement.

How can I pay my bill?

We accept Cash, Cheques, Bank Drafts, Debit or Credit Card payments. We also accept online banking payments & offer Auto Debit/Direct Debit automatic withdrawals.

I've SOLD my property? How do I cancel my service?

Please call or email the office with any changes or updates. See Land Transfers
