FOOTHILLS ODORANT INCIDENT - NOTIFICATION UPDATE

On Sunday, October 5th, Foothills Natural Gas Co-op experienced an odorant injection system malfunction on our Meter Station # 2 which resulted in the odorant delivery system at Station # 2 dumping a significant volume of odorizing agent into the pipeline system downstream of the station creating high levels of the “rotten egg” smell associated with that odorizing agent.

On Monday, October 7th, Foothills engaged in isolating the odorizing agent and began purging the odorant out of the pipelines servicing properties located on Tap 02 in the late afternoon and into the evening hours on Monday with two mobile flaring units which were utilized to burn off the high levels of the odorizing agent mixed within the natural gas.

Readings that were taken last night at pre-determined locations, after the flaring exercise was suspended, resulted in significantly reduced levels of the odorant in the system. Controlled flaring was continued on Tuesday morning, October 8th, to assist with further reducing the odorant levels.

Foothills does expect that member properties affected by this odorant issue may continue to experience the “rotten egg” smell associated with the odorant in the natural gas given the expectation that there will be pockets of the heavily odorized gas still in this leg of the distribution system.

The remaining areas of the heavily odorized gas will be at levels that are considerably lower than the readings recorded on Sunday and Monday. It should be noted that everyone has different sensitivity reactions to odorant exposure and ventilating your homes and outbuildings on your properties will assist in further reducing the effects of the odorized gas.

The Board of Directors and management at Foothills Natural Gas Co-op are committed to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our distribution system on behalf of our members and appreciates your patience in our response to this incident. If you require any additional information, please contact our office at (403) 556-3007 and our administrative staff will assist you.

Sincerely,

John Armstrong
